For your enjoyment this Super Bowl Sunday, here is the “lost” Cheers Super Bowl scene, written by Ken Levine and David Isaacs.  Ken talks about it on his blog.

And for the record, once again Diane picked the winner.  Never ever bet against Diane Chambers.

“Smart show.  The thing that I liked about it, and again, I never want to be grandpa in the room, so I don’t pitch this stuff… but now, if there’s not three jokes– and they have checkmarks on the pages, of how many jokes are on each page– someone goes, ‘we need more jokes on this page’.  And I just don’t buy it, I don’t think the audience gives a shit about it, and I don’t think it’s good writing.  I know there’s a lot of stuff that’s dated.  I know there’s a lot of things that you can’t really do anymore.  But I do think that Sam and Diane going at it for three pages where it’s subtext, and the audience… know there’s gonna be a payoff, I think that’s great TV, and I don’t see a reason why it wouldn’t work, but no one does it anymore.  But that’s a hallmark of Cheers.”

Q: Going back to Cheers– what made it work so well?

Sam Simon: Oh!  Chemistry between Ted Danson and Shelley Long!  Now I’m not saying the show wouldn’t have been a hit, but what made it work so well is that there’s this lightning in a bottle, this je ne sais quoi, there’s this thing called chemistry, and you can’t plan for it, it just hits and those two people had it, and you can’t stop watching it when you get it.  They just had It, and it wasn’t supposed to be the Sam and Diane Show, but Glen and Les Charles and Jimmy Burrows are all really smart, great TV producers and they said ‘Let’s make this show about these two’ … so no question what made that show pop.“

— Archive of American Television Interview with Cheers (also The Simpsons, Taxi) writer/producer Sam Simon, Apr il 13, 2013.

I love that he goes along in the interview rather relaxed and low key, and then he just springs to life on this question, smiling and laughing to himself throughout his response.  Clearly a big fan.

“Thank you all, and thank you cable television, for allowing those of us who eschew the pap and pablum of commercial television to sing, to dance, to write, and to listen to the whispers of our muses, although sometimes the voices of Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia and Urania are too soft to be heard.  Forgive me gals, if I forgot someone.  Thanks to my parents for conceiving and bearing me, although both wanted a boy, locked as were so many of their generation in masculine primacy… Anyhow, where to begin?…”
