“Smart show.  The thing that I liked about it, and again, I never want to be grandpa in the room, so I don’t pitch this stuff… but now, if there’s not three jokes– and they have checkmarks on the pages, of how many jokes are on each page– someone goes, ‘we need more jokes on this page’.  And I just don’t buy it, I don’t think the audience gives a shit about it, and I don’t think it’s good writing.  I know there’s a lot of stuff that’s dated.  I know there’s a lot of things that you can’t really do anymore.  But I do think that Sam and Diane going at it for three pages where it’s subtext, and the audience… know there’s gonna be a payoff, I think that’s great TV, and I don’t see a reason why it wouldn’t work, but no one does it anymore.  But that’s a hallmark of Cheers.”

Sam Simon: Oh!  Chemistry between Ted Danson and Shelley Long!  Now I’m not saying the show wouldn’t have been a hit, but what made it work so well is that there’s this lightning in a bottle, this je ne sais quoi, there’s this thing called chemistry, and you can’t plan for it, it just hits and those two people had it, and you can’t stop watching it when you get it.  They just had It, and it wasn’t supposed to be the Sam and Diane Show, but Glen and Les Charles and Jimmy Burrows are all really smart, great TV producers and they said ‘Let’s make this show about these two’ … so no question what made that show pop.“
